The Saronic Islands on a private catamaran - 7 days of Greek culture, tradition and heritage

Overview

Just a stone's throw from Athens, the islands that make up the Saronic Gulf generally offer easy sailing conditions in summer.

A blend of Greek culture, tradition and heritage, the main Saronic islands are : Aegina, ideal for family holidays, the wild island of Agistri, the magnificent island of Poros with its relaxing atmosphere, chic Spetses and Hydra, a hotbed of artistic creation, famous the world over for its classical beauty and stunning architecture.

The coastline of the Peloponnese, its high mountains set in fertile valleys. Villages with stone houses and tiled roofs. The sunsets are magnificent when, emerging from the heat haze, the mountain ranges appear haloed in purplish light.

Islands to Visit

Aegina

Historical basis of Voguéo In Greece, if you arrive in Aegina early in the morning, you'll see the local fishermen returning from the sea to tend their nets. Visit the holy sites, including churches and monasteries and the ancient temple of Aphaia. From Temple Hill you can also see the Acropolis of Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The island is famous for its pistachio products and local seafood. The best beaches for diving are Sarpa beach and Klima, with its blue-green waters, and Moni island, where you'll find peacocks and Kri Kri goats!

Agkistri

Agkistri is just one hour from Athens. The island's main port, Skala, has a beautiful natural setting, seafood tavernas and beautiful beaches. Stop off with your yacht at Dragonera and Chalikiada beach and dive into clear turquoise waters with abundant marine life, ideal for snorkelling. On the island, you can also try activities such as horse riding or kayaking.

Poros

The small island of Poros attracts many visitors looking for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. It is a beautiful green island with picturesque villages and blue waters. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Clock Tower and stroll around the island's harbour and cobbled streets! Love Bay, Askeli and Monastiri are some of the most popular swimming beaches worth exploring! Enjoy fine Greek cuisine and traditional desserts in the city centre and create unforgettable moments with your family and friends!

Hydra

Home to Greece's most picturesque port, Hydra is a beautiful little paradise that offers visitors a journey back in time. No cars or motor vehicles are used here, just horses and donkeys! Getting to know the historic sites is certainly worth a stroll around the island's port area. Lose yourself in the cobbled streets and take in the colourful buildings.

Spetses

Considered the most beautiful island in the Saronic Gulf, Spetses is a magnificent destination with a lush landscape, traditional architecture and crystal-clear waters! The most interesting visit to Spetses is the museum of Bouboulina, the island's native heroine of the Greek revolution. Visit Spetses in September for the Armata celebration and enjoy a remarkable experience that will bring you closer to the island's long history!

Ermioni

Imagine a small town jutting out into the sea like the prow of a ship. Ermioni is a rare stopover: a peninsula that has retained the authentic soul of the Greece of yesteryear. Take a stroll through the "Bisti", the pine forest at the tip of the town. Here you can walk between the remains of ancient temples, with water on either side so clear it seems unreal. It's the perfect stopover for a peaceful evening. Moor at the south quay to enjoy the sunset, or drop anchor in one of the surrounding wild bays for a midnight swim under the stars.

Vathi

Nestling on the volcanic Methana peninsula, Vathi is a small port where time seems to have stood still fifty years ago. It's the perfect port of call for those seeking raw, authentic and peaceful Greece. You enter Vathi through a narrow passage that opens onto a tiny quay lined with a few blue-shuttered tavernas. There are no luxury boutiques here, just the sound of fishing nets being mended and the lapping of the water against the volcanic stone jetty. The Volcano Walk: From the port, a small path leads us through goats and olive trees to the crater of Kameni Chora. The hike is accessible and spectacular: you'll be walking on petrified lava flows, surrounded by a lunar landscape of red and black rocks, with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Saronic Gulf.

Itineraries

There are several good cruises or itineraries lasting one or two weeks in the Saronic Islands. Our itineraries are the result of our own travel experiences and suggestions from our visitors. Our itineraries focus on quiet, unspoilt harbours rather than tourist centres.

Places to visit Epidaurus and its classical theatre, the corsair port towns of Poros, Hydra and Spetses, the beautiful neoclassical town of Nafplio and the nearby archaeological site of Mycenae, the fortified town of Monemvasia.

Wind & Sailing Conditions

The Meltem is most noticeable in summer at the eastern mouths of the Gulf, along the Hydra-Monemvasîa axis. Further west, the thermal effect comes into play, shifting the wind towards the east and even the south-east in the late afternoon at the head of the gulfs. At night, the trend reverses with WNW onshore breezes. Beware, the arrival of a high-pressure bubble and its strong NW'ly winds in the Ionian Sea may generate violent, katabatic W'ly winds at night along the eastern coast of the Peloponnese. The most exposed ports are Aegina and Hydra. This influence can be felt as far west as the Cyclades. .
