Greece is navigable almost all year round, but each season has its own characteristics. Here's our complete guide to choosing the ideal period to suit your desires, your budget and your experience of the sea.
April - May: spring, the ideal season for families
Spring is undoubtedly the most pleasant time to sail in Greece. Temperatures are mild (20-25°C), the sea is calm, the islands are not yet overrun by tourists and prices are at their lowest.
This is the perfect season for families with children, first-time cruisers and those who want to enjoy the islands without the summer crowds. The Ionian islands - Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia - are particularly beautiful in spring, with their lush vegetation.
June: the best value for money
June combines the best of both worlds: the sea is warm, the sun is generous, the islands come alive without being overcrowded and prices are still reasonable before the summer peak.
This is our favourite month for the Saronic Islands and the Cyclades. Mykonos, Santorini, Paros - all these iconic islands are accessible without the prices and crowds of July and August.
July - August: high season, for those who love the atmosphere
This is the hottest period (30-35°C) and the liveliest. The Greek islands are at their festive peak - open terraces, crowded beaches, nightlife.
However, beware of Meltemi - This northerly wind can blow strongly in the Aegean in July and August. On a catamaran like our Lagoon 52, it can be managed very well thanks to the boat's stability, but it can disrupt certain itineraries.
This is also the most expensive period. If you book in July-August, plan ahead several months in advance.
September - October: the golden season
September is our absolute favourite. The sea is at its warmest (24-26°C), the Meltemi has calmed down, the islands have regained their authenticity and prices have dropped significantly.
This is the ideal time to visit the Cyclades and the Dodecanese - Rhodes, Patmos, Symi. The sunsets are spectacular, the anchorages quieter and the atmosphere more intimate.
October remains very pleasant in the southern islands, even if the nights are starting to cool off.
Our recommendation
For your first catamaran cruise in the Greek islands, we recommend May, June or September. You'll enjoy the best sailing conditions, more affordable prices and a more authentic experience.
For those who want the maximum Greek atmosphere - July or August, booking well in advance.
